Hans J. Wegner (pronounced VEG-ner in English and VAY-ner in Danish) preferred to work in solid wood, but occasionally he explored the use of bent plywood, and for that we are very thankful. Sometimes called the “smiling chair,” his Shell Chair (1963) achieves a floating lightness due to its wing-like seat and the arching curves of its tapered legs. With retro-kitsch and vintage trends making a return to the interiors world and TV shows such as Mad Men taking the nation by storm, home appliance brand New World has created the ultimate home appliance for retro style lovers – a pistachio coloured high level grill.

The pistachio retro model has been created to mark the launch of New World new electric 50 and 55cm high level grill cookers. The unveiling comes as new customer research by New World reveals that retro styling could be making a return, with 39 percent of those surveyed saying they prefer a more traditional look to their appliances and 18 percent choosing a retro or vintage theme for their ultimate kitchen.

A recent study completed by biologists from around the world, including scientists from the United States and Great Britain, has concluded that 22% – over 1 in 5 – of plant species are endangered.

While those numbers are daunting, it was wonderful to read the news that the Maguire Daisy, formerly threatened by mineral exploration and other human disruption, has recovered, and was de-listed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species list earlier this month.

A recent project by Berlin-based Kix Studio isn’t just design for those in need, but smart design with social and economic benefits. The Mousso Koroba rocking chair uses reclaimed plastic bags and handcrafted local artisans to produce a useful, durable chair for native Malians. At just 26 dollars, the colorful rocker is context-specific, and is used and built by its beneficiary. The chair is formed using twisted cords of recycled plastic bags, which are woven and wrapped around a simple frame. The chair can be folded, carried, and stored easily.
