Good gardening tools and habits will keep you working strong

by Alexander Catt on June 11, 2013 0

WHEN IT comes to staying safe in the garden, it’s all about preventing injuries in the first place. You don’t want to waste time recovering from a sore back because you couldn’t resist moving that heavy pot by yourself, or a twisted ankle from stretching beyond your center of gravity to prune just one more limb. Especially this time of year, when we’re scrambling to keep up, and all we want to do is accomplish one task and then the next.

Which is a big part of the problem, isn’t it? We’re so eager to get the beans into the ground and the seedlings watered that we don’t notice how tired we are. Gardening is not a competitive sport. There’s no prize at the end for those who finish first. There’s never any “finishing” with gardening anyway, so you may as well slow down and savor the experience.

Garden tools are like pots and pans, kitchen knives and utensils.

Happy New Year! Besides recovering from the holiday madness festivities, the beginning of each year usually means I’ll be interviewed by several Web sites, blogs and magazines about my predictions for nursery trends of the New Year.

Plaid – like this bedding from Bratt Decor – will be popular in 2011 nursery decor.

We’ve already seen plaid regain popularity in fashion during the fall of 2010, and this year I believe we’re going to see it more frequently in home decor.

Top boutique hotels around Sorrento

by Alexander Catt on May 30, 2013 0

Italys Sorrento coast is a verdant landscape of valleys, mountains and terraced cliff-tops, leading straight to the warm blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Its no surprise that a coastline which sparked ancient legends of sirens and sea-creatures should play host to some inspiring accommodation. For those looking for a unique experience with a little luxury thrown in, here are a few of the best boutique hotels for Sorrento holidays in the sun.

Home to just seven rooms and tucked away in quiet SantAgnello, the Villa dei dArmiento exudes an intimate feel, while only a short distance from Sorrento centre. Each of the suites is furnished individually, but all reference the lush vegetation and floral colours of the peninsula, with added touches like Murano glass chandeliers. Breakfast on the terrace in the shade of palm trees, peruse the library or cool off in the outdoor pool.

David Pfeiffer takes yard from dull to dynamic (and great for kids) in Medina

by Alexander Catt on May 15, 2013 0

THE LANDSCAPE at the Tam family’s home in Medina was uninspiring. “It was really dull, pretty much a pathway to and from the house,” says Lucille Tam. The two flat levels of lawn didn’t even draw the kids outside to play.

The couple dreamed of a garden alive with birds, a landscape to connect the family to nature as well as complement their house. They liked the idea of adding a little wildness to the suburban scene of manicured lawns. Simon Tam, who travels to Paris for his work, is also intrigued by European garden formality. Yet they also hoped for a garden they could maintain themselves.

The Tams hired landscape architect David Pfeiffer to turn their yard into a nature sanctuary as well as a place for their two young girls to play. They also wanted space for dining and asked Pfeiffer to work with what they had. To lend scale to the house, he kept many of the large trees on the property.

by Alexander Catt on May 4, 2013 0

Oak Furniture, such as Oak Furniture from the Furniture Market, is very popular for home furnishings and because of its longevity it offers fantastic value for money for those who invest. Although oak furniture is often known for its simplicity; it can also help bring contrast to a room lacking the wow factor and a stunning focal point, especially in the bedroom. Such is attained through a range of bespoke and equally stunning finishes such as oiled, waxed and lacquer oak finish.

Such allows you to have everything you need to gain your dream bedroom, since it offers luxurious looks as well as the best in giving you an appearance of elegance.
