On March 25-27 in Chicago, architectural nonprofit DesignCorps is hosting the 11th annual Structures for Inclusion conference, one of the few conferences I believe has real impact. The 3-day event will “bring together activists, designers, funders, and policy makers who are at the forefront of designing in the public’s interest.” In short, this is a conferences for architectural and design practitioners who don’t just “give a damn,” but who are walking the walk.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and IKEA recently announced the voluntary recall of RUND clear glass mugs. Due to variations in glass thickness, the mug may break when in use. IKEA received one report of a laceration injury caused by the mug that required medical attention.

UL Environment, a division of Underwriters Laboratories (UL), has acquired Air Quality Sciences and its offshoot, Greenguard Environmental Institute.

 

UL Environment is a division of Underwriter’s Laboratory, one of the most recognized and trusted labels for product safety since 1894. Begun last year to provide independent validation of green certifications and claims, the acquisition makes great sense.

Designer Emiliano Godoy’s Snowjob Chair is shimmering, glimmering, and made with a conscience. The lovely seat is built from FSC-certified wood, biodegradable finish, and a material called “Ecoist,” which is handmade from tiny pieces of offcuts from candy wrapper manufacturers. The material is assembled by craftswomen, providing economic opportunities, and provides an intricate, unique patina for the chair, which is reinforced with a post-consumer recycled paper layer on the inside. It can also be broken down and flat-packed for easy shipment and storage.
