Right now we are witnessing a change in lighting technology that is also having a dramatic impact on the world around us. You may have heard about LED lighting, you may not know how or why it is having the kind of effect it is. Although you can find it as a replacement bulb for just about any light imaginable in the residential and business area, it has so much more potential and the effects it is having on budgets and energy consumption are remarkable.
LED (light emitting diodes) lighting is a type of bulb that was originally created to serve as a replacement to standard bulbs needed in display panels. From those early designs back in the 1960s to the ultra bright LED lighting that we have today these bulbs are revolutionizing the industry because of their energy efficiency and durability.
Because they are created without a filament LED Christmas lights and other bulbs have a huge advantage over traditional incandescent bulbs. LEDs can resist the damage that occurs from vibration and impact, and as a result they are able to last a substantial amount of time. For example, the incandescent bulb has a basic life of about 750 hours, or a little over a month of strait usage. The compact fluorescent bulb, which is much more superior, can last as long as 10,000 hours or a little over a year of continued usage. LED lighting has been reported to last a startling 100,000 hours or what amounts to over 11 and a half years of non stop use.
When you take into consideration that the standard incandescent bulb generally costs about $1.99 a piece and the LED $20 for a single light, it is no wonder that many people are turned away from these remarkable lights. However, if you look closer at the numbers you may be a little surprised. The reality is, if you were to buy the amount of incandescent bulbs that you would need to last the duration of a single LED you would have to spend over $250.
It is not just the long lasting nature of LED lighting that is attractive, but also its efficiency. Even though the cost of the product in the long run would be cheaper than traditional lighting, there is even more savings potential in just usage. If you take for example a 40 watt bulb and use LED lighting as a replacement you would only have to run 1.5 watts of power to get the same amount of light.
The basic fact is LED lights are going to change the world. It cost less, is more robust in its usage, and in the simple fact that it consumes a profoundly less amount of energy it will be a serious benefit to the world around us.
