Mousso Korobo chairs for and by Malians

A recent project by Berlin-based Kix Studio isn’t just design for those in need, but smart design with social and economic benefits. The Mousso Koroba rocking chair uses reclaimed plastic bags and handcrafted local artisans to produce a useful, durable chair for native Malians. At just 26 dollars, the colorful rocker is context-specific, and is used and built by its beneficiary. The chair is formed using twisted cords of recycled plastic bags, which are woven and wrapped around a simple frame. The chair can be folded, carried, and stored easily. Aside from the environmental benefits of using trash as material, the manufacturing process itself is quite simple and can be built by unskilled workers to empower local microeconomies and new cottage industries. Check out more photos of the Mousso Koroba chair on Kix Studio’s website.
